In this “How I Wind Down…” series, we talk to a lot of different women about how they prepare for a relaxing evening.
Any girl with curly hair will attest that sometimes those unruly locks are both a blessing and a curse. It’s something many people try to imitate with hours of practice and lots of heat, but unfortunately if you use the wrong product or don’t take the time to take care of the natural curls, disaster ensues. often. Thus, a proven beauty routine is essential.
Since joining Bread Beauty Supply – a New York-born hair and body care brand recently launched at Sephora Australia – global style director Shelby Samaria has perfected a nighttime routine that not only helps her relax for day, but also to make sure she’s ready for the Next. With experience in the best salons in town, including Ion Studio and Suite Caroline, as well as major fashion week shows such as Ganni, Burberry, Prada, Versace, Sacai, Dior, Valentino, Celine , Alexander McQueen and Miu Miu (to name a few), Samaria is a seasoned pro.
In a special edition of How I relax we spoke with the expert about how she spends her evenings, as well as the dos and don’ts of evening hair care. You’re welcome.
GRAZIA: Can you describe your nighttime beauty routine?
“I first set the mood! After a long day, I usually come home, light my favorite Woods candle from Byredo, turn on my kettle to make a quick cup of Japanese Iribancha tea, and if I’m exhausted from a long day and I need to relax, I’ll pour a glass of chilled red wine instead.
Then I tie my hair properly according to my current hairstyle. Lately I’ve been wearing my hair styled long and long, pressed, with a bit of a frizzy, very 90s texture – so I braid it into two low pigtails with a little BREAD hair oil or put it in a low bun with my BREAD Hair Puff. And I always protect my hair with a shower cap!
I jump in a hot shower – I also prefer to clean my face while I shower. I use a soft cotton pad with micellar water to remove any makeup or buildup from the day. I usually use my Lait U cleansing milk from Biologique Recherche or Cetaphil, depending on whether I wear makeup or not. It also depends on how hydrated my skin feels at the moment. Once out of the shower, I hydrate. I’ve been on Osea’s Body Butter lately and am finishing with BREAD’s Macadamia Oil.
Some evenings, I tone my face with P50 from Biologique if needed and moisturize with whatever suits my skin at the time. I cocktail moisturizers and serums. I’m in love with Epi.Logic’s daily dose of vitamin C and their dual function retinol to finish.
How do you prep your hair for a hassle-free morning after?
“If I wear straight hair, I always roll my hair up and put on a silk hat or scarf. Some nights I put on a little BREAD hair oil to keep my ends looking fresh. If my hair is textured and in my most natural form of 4C curls, I’ll either place them in a pineapple ponytail with a silk scarf or scrunchie, or put in a few twists or braids using BREAD Hair Cream (launch in Australia this year) to keep the hydration and soft, lively texture.
What are the do’s and don’ts of evening hair care?
“DON’T: Constantly wet your hair during every shower, sleep without any hair protection SILK PILLOWCASES OR SILK SCARVES, use rubber bands or hair ties with too much friction when putting on hair, sleeping on hair without preparation, sleeping on wet hair, cotton pillowcases, ironing flat, wrapping hair with metal clips or bobby pins.
DO: shower caps in the shower, silk scarves, silk headbands, silk scrunchies and pillowcases, overnight hair prep for protection using creams and oils to achieve vibrant hair and refreshed in the morning, rubber hair clips.
How to relax after a busy day?
“I keep the lights low and warm, turn on some relaxing music, take a hot shower, and on some nights I meditate and stretch to release any tension before bed. As a thinker, I think that it’s so important to lie down with an empty mind.I usually stain my entire apartment to keep the energy going and help me get a good night’s rest.
How do you decorate your space to help you fall asleep?
“My space is very calming. In my bedroom, I like to keep things light and airy with calm elements of natural depth. I have lots of happy plants near my windows. My sheets are often plush, a soft white or lighter in color and texture.And every week I buy delicate, delicate, light-colored flowers from my local florist to place on my white oak bedside table for happiness.
I don’t have curtains in my bedroom because I like waking up to the sun and looking at the moon. Without them, my space feels bigger and more transitional. I wake up to lots of greenery in the yard and birds chirping. I have so much gratitude that I was able to wake up to these benefits of nature in Brooklyn.
What time are you going to sleep?
“Did I mention I have insomnia? Ha! Bedtimes vary for me. Age and my daily responsibilities help me to go to bed at a “decent” time. Oh and soothing evening teas help a lot. I usually go to bed between 11:30 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.
Do you plan the next day’s look before going to bed? What is your favorite set?
“If I have something important to attend like meetings, events or a night out with friends after work at the studio, YES! But usually, no. I’m very organized, but I never have the energy to take a look the night before. I’m totally laid back, I understand mornings these days. I have many versatile pieces in my closet that are easily collaborative, which helps. Lately my favorite set was to be oversized black pants with a fun, fitted shirt.
